These days, I don’t have as many chances to play sports games as I used to. Many of my sports equipment is resting on outdoor shelving in my garage, collecting dust. Nonetheless, I still get to use some of the equipment sports every now and then. The outdoor sports equipment, in particular, has been getting use this spring. The weather has been wonderful, and it has been difficult to remain inside any more than I need to. I did a lot of mountain biking, hiking, and I even got to play a friendly game of soccer. It has been good to take out the old sports equipment and try it on again.
When I was a child I had lunch with Vice-President Lyndon Johnson. My step-dad was a shaker and mover in the DC area and he knew everyone who was anyone at the time. My Mom has a picture – an 8×10 glossy black-and-white print – of me, my step-dad and Vice-President Johnson eating lunch in a Capitol dining facility. We are sitting in a half-moon round booth eating and posing for the picture. But for the photo I have no recollection of it. I was about 5 at the time.
The 2003 college football season was the first really controversial season for the Bowl Championship Series. Three teams: LSU, Oklahoma, and USC had only one loss and had every right to play in the championship game. BCS ranked USC third in the final polls despite gaining the top spot in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. However, by being third in the BCS, they were left out of the final game. USC’s win secured a share of the national title, but they were forced to share it with LSU automatically won the Coaches’ poll by winning the BCS National Championship.
Auburn’s biggest problem was they didn’t look good enough in spring practice. Despite the BCS trying to limit preseason perceptions, USC and OU started the season number one and two, respectively, in the AP and Coaches’ Polls, which count for two thirds of the BCS formula. Auburn began number 17 in the AP and 18 in the Coaches’ poll. Despite winning all their games, they were never able to jump either USC or OU, and therefore shut out of the big game.
I attended Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va. My Mom went there too, as did my Dad and tons of famous folks: Actor Forrest Tucker was a W-L grad. Brother/sister duo Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty are W-L grads. My Mom was two years behind MacLaine and was in the same class or was one year ahead of Warren Beatty – she knew them both – not well, but it was a much smaller school in those days.
